I Dare You to Read These 4 Books

We all have those books we desperately want others to try and so we gush about them over and over again, hoping someone will pick them up. Today, I’m going to be a little self-indulgent and talk about some of the books that fit this description for me. Now, there are plenty of books that I love to death that I see a lot of others really enjoying and talking about as well, so I decided that I wanted to focus on some books that I have really loved that I don’t see talked about quite as much as they really should be.

A dark background with an ornate blue-silver key in the foreground. Book cover of Incarceron by Catherine Fisher.

Fantasy — Firstly, if you’re into physic-breaking magic use that might leave your head reeling for a bit, I would recommend Incarceron. The world consists of a prison so large that it contains whole metal biomes, and the story follows the daughter of the warden of the prison and a young teenage boy trapped inside the prison. Together, the two attempt to formulate an escape attempt, but because of the nature of the prison, it’s no small feat.

Background of the lower portion of a woman’s face is out of focus. In the foreground is a sepia-toned image of a city street from the 1800s. Cover of Inamorata by Megan Chance.

Historical Fiction — Inamorata is both historical fiction and paranormal in nature. Joseph and Sophie Hannigan both make a trip to Venice and wind up in the inner circles of the city's creatives. Artists, writers, singers, and dancers all make up a group of people seeking out one thing: immortality. Most seek immortality through their art, by creating masterpieces that will outlast their lifetime. Odile Leon can make that happen. Joseph Hannigan is just one more artist who wishes to have Odile as his muse, but the cost of Odile’s inspiration may be a price he won’t be able to pay. By joining forces with Nicholas Dane, a previous victim of Odile’s, Sophie must attempt to save her brother from Odile’s clutches.

A light-colored background with a long-haired brunette girl in the foreground. A breeze has caused her hair to cover half of her face. Cover of Thrall by Jennifer Quintenz.

Paranormal Romance — When it comes to romance and action, Thrall has the combination on lock. I’ve actually written once before about this book after I first read through the series, and even years later it still sticks with me as one of the few series I’ve devoured at breakneck speed. The story follows Braedyn, a normal high school girl who’s just discovered she may not be so normal anymore. On her sixteenth birthday, abilities previously unknown to her manifest, and she learns of her true identity as a succubus. Braedyn has to learn what this new information about herself means about her family history, navigate her already difficult teenage relationships, and avoid The Guard — a group of fighters on a mission to eradicate the succubi from the world.

A dark green background with a silver dagger entwined in thorny roses in the foreground. Cover of Jack of Thorns by A.K. Faulkner.

LGBT — Jack of Thorns is the first book in the Inheritance series, which I am actually not yet finished with. I am currently reading book 4 of 8 and cannot stop thinking about these characters. The first book introduces Laurence Riley, a recovering addict with a magical green thumb who works as a florist in San Diego. He and his mother have always had a way with plants that surpassed what most would consider normal, but Laurence never really thought he would meet anyone else with similar abilities. Enter Quentin D’Arcy, a wayward rich kid running from his family problems in London with telekinetic abilities. When the two meet, not only do sparks fly, but adventure strikes up in the form of a god with not-so-good plans for the city of San Diego.

All four of these books deserve more love than I have seen them receive so far, which is why I’m issuing this challenge. So why not pick one up and tell me what you think? Go on, I dare you.
